Hyla Overview

About Hyla

Hyla is devoted to teaching students in grades 6-12 to think critically and wisely, find heartfelt joy and interest in learning, and lead lives of character and integrity. Our students emerge with voice and independence, ready for high school both academically and socially.

Hyla is...

  • a school where every student is seen, understood, challenged, and celebrated in  academic classes that feature active student involvement, and in extra-curricular programs that introduce students to new experiences to encourage growth.
  • a philosophy that insists on small class sizes so that students and teachers can develop the close, caring connections that are the foundation of all learning.
  • a pedagogy infused with freedom, choice, and collaboration to engage students in their own academic growth.
  • a curriculum that allows teachers to engage students in active, hands-on learning.
  • a place where students thrive in dynamic settings of our two distinct campuses, each designed to meet the needs of the age it serves.
  • a culture of respect, kindness, inclusion, and participation that develops young leaders with character and integrity.
  • a community that takes care of each other, during the middle school years, high school years, and beyond.

In 2021, the entire campus was renovated, including the addition of a new Community Hall, theater, kitchen, and HyLab (makerspace). Our campus also includes the historic barn with climbing wall, outdoor playfield, disc golf course, sport court, meadow, Gaga pit, and surrounding woods and trails.
  • Grades 9-12: Likewise, our high school campus is intentionally designed to best serve the age and the program. Our upper school campus is located on Ericksen Avenue in Winslow, with easy access to downtown, the ferry terminal, and Kitsap Transit buses.

Transportation: Parents are responsible for transporting their students to and from school, but we do offer a shuttle service for off-island families. We encourage car-pooling.  We also partner with Kitsap Transit's "BI Ride"  bus service and they come to our middle school every afternoon after school. Students at our upper school can walk to the ferry terminal to access all the Kitsap Transit bus routes.
