Summer Fun at Hyla

Join us for summer fun at Hyla!

For two weeks, we offer morning and afternoon classes to experience a taste of Hyla. We offer small class sizes, a beautiful 13-acre campus, and engaging teachers who know how to connect with students to encourage their growth and learning.

The Hyla program values personal development as much as academic growth, integrity as much as achievement, and challenge as much as support. The same is true for our summer offerings.

Week I, Morning Class: 9 - 11:30 AM

Racquet-Paddle Mania with David Maron

Hand-eye coordination your thing?  Enjoy fun, playful competition? Net sports are an awesome place for movement, strategy, teamwork, intrigue and intensity.  Ping Pong? Check. Tennis. Of course. Pickleball. Yes, please. Badminton. Sure! Volleyball. By all means. We will spend the week trying out each of these net sports.  We’ll play here on the Hyla campus, but also travel to various parks on the island to take advantage of the wonderful outdoor facilities that this island has to offer! This camp is for folks new to racquet/paddle sports, as well as those with lots of experience.  We’ll learn skills, play, compete, and explore together. Come ready for fun...hopefully in the sun!

Week I, Afternoon Class: 12-2:30 PM

Improv with Chris Soldevilla

Develop your theater skills this week through instruction and “Whose line is it” style theater games. The activities stretch your imagination through group collaborations in scenes created on the spot. Some of the games include: “Lines from a Hat”, “Freeze”, “Park Bench”, “Questions”, and many more! Come with an open mind and a quick wit.

Week II, Morning Class 9-11:30 AM

Ultimate Frisbee with Andrew Lovejoy

Ultimate is an incredible sport. It emphasizes sportsmanship and “Spirit of the Game.” It’s inclusive, exciting, and fast-paced. It requires self-regulation and team spirit. During this camp we will work on the basic fundamentals of the game: throwing and catching, cutting, and defense. We'll learn some drills to practice these essential skills and spend lots of time playing Ultimate. In addition, we'll learn a few other fun games that can be played using a disc. This camp will be fun and challenging for players of all levels of skill and experience.

Week II, Afternoon Class 12 - 2:30 PM

Photography with Dinah Satterwhite

Get our your cameras! We are going to explore the top ten tips for taking better photos, and put them into action! Look beyond the ordinary, to find imaginative and unique objects in everyday things all around you. Let’s develop your photographic “eye” by applying some basic rules that apply to photo opps. Get familiar with words like: pixels, cropping, backlighting, and DPI.  So get ready to aim, shoot, and take better pictures! Taught by local photographer Dinah Satterwhite. Equipment: Students provide their own camera to use during camp, preferably an SLR camera. Alternately: a camera phone, or other device that takes photos like an iPad would work.
