We greeted parents with reassuring smiles during our “Hyla Parent University” webinar. Speakers provided support, encouragement, and tips specific to these challenging times.
Students in the Spring Photography Challenge get fresh air as they capture beautiful moments of the season around their homes.
We created a daily planner for students to help them fill their days with healthy food, exercise, and the things that make them happy. Human Relations teacher Cooper illustrated the planner with drawings to inspire activities.
Checkmate! Chess is one of several electives classes offered each week, along with yoga, Zumba, drawing, cooking, board games, current events, and book club.
Sharing your work is an essential part of learning and a big part of Hyla's culture. Teachers integrated a range of online tools to enable students to upload videos, comments, and photos so that students could share their own work, comment on what classmates created, and collaborate. One student shared this illustration included in his history research project.
We begin every day in connection with "Clean Crews," like advisory groups. Even through screens, the elaborate signature handshakes of each Clean Crew live on!
A group of 7th graders collaborated to create a "Quarantine Cookbook." They intentionally curated simple recipes made from every-day pantry ingredients. They also illustrated the cookbook with drawings.
On Friday afternoons Hyla teachers host Zoom hangouts for each grade to give students a space to connect, catch up, and be themselves.
Performances, recitals and other culminating events couldn't happen as they normally do. With so many events turning to technology, it was a wonderful chance to share accomplishments and enjoy talents, like Kai's piano performance for a local competition.
Despite distance, we stay connected as a community with our weekly newsletter that includes happy news from families, like when 8th grader Wes McNutt was selected for Boundless Washington, the state’s new outdoor leadership program for young people with disabilities.
Exciting news: we broke ground on the next phase of our campus renovation, a new multi-purpose building! We never could have imagined that extra square footage and improved air quality would become critical safety considerations for this school year. Read more here.
We did it! Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated to our auction - parents, alumni parents, trustees, teachers, grandparents and friends. Together we surpassed our goal and raised over $120,000! Thank you!
This year our annual auction was held online. We kicked it off with a video, which one family enjoyed by sunset.

In the early days of quarnatine, a 6th grader shared boredom buster ideas. We love the message behind every activity: whatever you do, share it with others! Connection and community are so important right now and there are many creative ways to keep them going.
Global Ed teacher Kimber share her enthusiasm after the first full week of distance learning: "Disheveled or coiffed, the crew arrives with smiles. I've met dogs and bunnies and waved at passing parents. The connection is different but sincere and authentic. And just as relevant. There was no way to predict this course. And yet, I have been so incredibly thrilled at how it has been embraced by so many kids and families."
Four days after schools closed across the state, we launched distance learning at Hyla. As we embarked on this new adventure, Cooper, our Human Relations and PE teacher, shared this wisdom from what he has learned as a sailor.
