Selection Process
Middle School: Prospective students and their parents often ask what we look for in students. Simply stated, we look for students whose growth we can foster, and who will—in turn—enrich and believe in our school community and its efforts. We seek to match a student’s ability and needs with the goals and resources of our school. We actively seek a diverse student body and welcome a range of capabilities, interests, and personalities.
High School: This guiding framework tells you about the students we welcome and the work they will do together, with faculty, with the on-site College Counselor & Academic Specialist, and with local and global communities. This framework tells you about Hyla’s culture of participation, our emphasis on experience, and the intellectual habits and practices that we develop and encourage in Hyla High School students.
Affording Hyla
- Flexible Tuition: Flexible Tuition allows different families to pay different amounts based on their unique financial circumstances. We work with a third party that determines the tuition amount that makes sense for each family. If the top range of Hyla's tuition feels out of reach based on based on your family’s budget, we encourage you to apply. We are happy to talk with you about our process and encourage you to get in touch and ask questions. 52% of Hyla families use our Flexible Tuition resources.
- Merit Scholarship - grades 9-12: The Hyla Merit Scholarship fund exists to make our upper school program more accessible to more students. It is available to new students entering grades 9-12 (including current Hyla students moving from the middle school to the upper school). Scholarship applications are reviewed by the Flexible Tuition Committee, which distributes available funds based on student qualifications, family financial need, and availability of funds. Hyla Merit Scholarships reflect our school values of inclusion, participation, accomplishment, sportsmanship, academic courage, self-awareness, social-emotional health, and service/activism. Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate their commitment, growth, accomplishment, and/or leadership in any of the following areas: academics, athletics, activism/service, and extra-curriculars. Please click here for more details about the application and deadline.
Hyla School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, disability, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or other legally protected status in admission of otherwise qualified students or in providing access to the rights, privileges, programs, or activities generally available to all students and their families, including educational policies, tuition assistance programs, athletic, extra-curricular, other school-administered programs and activities, and hiring or employment practices.
