Athletics - Grades 9-12
Hyla students can participate on the interscholastic teams at their resident public schools per the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. WIAA is an independent non-profit organization that promotes fairness and equality for students in Washington, and is tasked with regulating, supervising, and controlling WA state interscholastic activities. Over half of Hyla High students pursue athletics and we encourage and support all our athletes.
As members of the following Bainbridge Spartan and Club teams, Hyla students work hard, break records, win trophies, and take their teams to new levels: rowing, swimming, Ultimate, water polo, soccer, cross country, gymnastics, and tennis. Bravo! Our curriculum also offers opportunities for fitness and athletics - see below.
Athletics in Curriculum
Within Hyla's curriculum, students have opportunities for fitness and athletics through:
- Electives - 2/week within our daily schedule
- Pursuits (Clubs) - 2/week within our daily schedule
- Panoramas - multi-week immersive courses at the end of each semester
These opportunities within our curriculum invite students to try new things, experience new environments, and get moving, from rock climbing, to snow shoeing, to yoga and barre classes.

Registration & Requirements
Registration: For club sports, click on the links above. For Spartan sports, click here. Please note that BHS requires that parents/guardians register students - not Hyla, nor students themselves.
Concussion baseline testing: All athletes must also have a current (no older than 24 months) baseline concussion test on file in the BHS office before turning out for a sport. Please sign up for concussion baseline testing if needed.
Physical Exam: Schedule a Physical Exam if it has been more than 24 months since the last one. Please note the WIAA Form is the preferred physical form, but physical forms from pediatrician offices are also accepted as long as they state that the athlete is cleared to play sports.
Important Tips
Register early! Once your student is registered, you will get all the information from coaches and captains directly. Please note that while coaches cannot host practices or activities prior to the official season start date (in accordance with Washington Interscholastic Activities Association rules), team captains can (and do) host activities prior to the season start date. The sooner your student is signed up, the sooner they can participate! Sign up your athletes so they are on the list to receive all sports communications from coaches and captains.
Consider Club Sports: Club Sports are opportunities for students to engage in specific sports and activities that are not overseen by BISD and are managed by independent organizations. Information about club sports is also located on this BHS Athletics page.
We are here to help! If your student is not sure if he/she wants to participate in a sport and would like to learn more, please have them talk to a teacher or staff member at Hyla. There is a lot we can do to help your student try something new - brainstorm possibilities, offer suggestions, and even connect him/her with someone who is already participating in that sport. In addition, you can contact head coaches directly. Each sport has its own webpage on the BHS Athletics’ site (links above), where you will find names and contact info. This is the best way to get specific questions answered.
