Diversity Statement
Hyla School’s mission is founded upon support for one another and respect for individual differences. Because we value diversity, we honor the unique qualities of each individual in our community. These include race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, socio-economic status, learning styles, abilities, and varied points of view. It is core to our values that differences - and a community's ability to recognize, support and celebrate the differences within it - help students grow as individuals with integrity.
We believe that multiple perspectives and experiences provide a foundation for educational excellence and prepare students to interact and communicate with courage, understanding, and compassion. We acknowledge that this work is a process. We commit to continual learning and ongoing adjustment to evolve not only our understanding and thinking, but also our approaches and practices so that we strengthen our school community and the world around us.
Nondiscrimination Statement: Hyla School does not discriminate in its admissions, hiring, or employment practices on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, gender, national or ethnic origin, citizenship or immigration status, sex, ancestry, age, family or marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, honorably discharged veteran or military status, and/or the presence of any physical disability (including pregnancy), mental disability, or sensory disability, or any other legally protected characteristic or status.
Community & Inclusion: At Hyla, “we take care of each other.” Our motto is founded on the belief that this simple, yet powerful, sometimes hard, and sometimes complex action of “taking care” is what makes a vibrant and inclusive community, what fosters true belonging, what creates a thriving learning environment and transformative educational experience. We are committed to creating a school environment where all students, regardless of their background, identity, or abilities, feel seen, heard, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential and have the opportunity to flourish.
Our school’s strategic priority of Cultivating a Culture of Care, Community, and Belonging means that we invest resources, planning, time, thought, and tremendous heart in this ongoing work. It means we engage in ongoing dialogue, challenging ourselves to constantly examine our policies, practices, and curriculum through a lens of equity and inclusion. Our dedication to inclusivity stretches beyond our campus walls as we extend - “We take care of each other” to “We take care of each other… and the world.” We do this by actively engaging with the broader community, fostering partnerships and learning opportunities that enrich our understanding of the world and our place within it. At Hyla, being a part of this community, means caring and being cared for, including and being included, welcoming and belonging.
Land Acknowledgement: We, the Hyla School community, acknowledge that we gather and learn on the traditional territory of the Suquamish people, known as the "People of Clear Salt Water." Their ancestors have stewarded this land and surrounding waters since time immemorial, and their rich cultural heritage continues to shape the landscape and lives of those who live here today. We recognize the enduring relationship between the Suquamish people and their ancestral lands, and the ongoing impacts of colonization and displacement. We honor the Suquamish people's ongoing contributions to the fabric of our community and strive to learn from their deep connection to this place.
