Hyla Stories
Colonial American History at Hyla
Arriving at the 6A tent this morning for Cohort Crew, you might have wondered if time travel had taken place as you saw Humanities teacher Jennifer in her bonnet and polonaise gown. “Are you a middling?” asked one student, applying her knowledge of clothing worn by different social classes in the colonies. Our Hyla 6th graders are currently immersed in early American history. As shown in this picture taken by Jennifer, students have created colonial claims maps, researching the Europeans who came to North America and the indigenous peoples already living on the continent at that time. This week Humanities students also worked in small groups and analyzed primary sources, evaluating what really happened in Jamestown. To help students understand how much you can learn from colonial clothing including social class and trade, Jennifer wore her authentic (and comfortable!) garments to school, while also adding the required 2020 accessories of face mask, thermometer, and hand sanitizer.
It’s been exciting to see and hear the meadow again filled with students drawing maps, solving math problems, playing games, discussing poetry, and enjoying being together in the autumn sunshine.
