Global Ed celebrates Earth Day
April 23, 2020
In what Kim called a “moving and grooving” Global Education class on Monday, students stepped away from their desks to take photos of blooming flowers outside, raid the refrigerator for vegetables they could grow on their own, and sift through the recycling bin for items that could be reused. The motivation behind this interactive scavenger hunt is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
To celebrate, 7th graders have been working alongside Jane Goodall’s foundation, Roots and Shoots, to complete daily challenges that inspire action. By connecting students with a global network of experts through Roots and Shoots, and connecting them to fellow students around the country through the youth-based Sunrise Movement, Global Ed class involves students in constructive, positive change and empowers them to take action from inside and around their own homes.
From big actions (like growing a garden) to small steps (like watching a Food Systems video) These daily challenges offer concrete steps students can take to support the environment. By engaging with global efforts and expertise, students learn about the good work already being done around the world and how they can get involved.
On Earth Day tomorrow, students in Global Ed will watch the global premiere of the new documentary “Jane Goodall: The Hope” and share their favorite plant-based recipes to create a class cookbook. If your family is looking for a way to celebrate Earth Day, check out the challenges below.
