Upper School Spanish Trivia Podcast:

To celebrate Hispanic/Latino/Latinx Heritage Month, Hyla students in Spanish (levels 3 and 4) created a trivia podcast in a sound studio at BARN, thanks to BARN teachers Frank Charlton and Bob Ross. While learning the technical side of podcast creation, students used their language skills in a meaningful context as they created something to share with all of you.

Spanish teacher Tom Neal uses hands-on activities that inject a sense of urgency into student work that requires them to use their Spanish skills in different ways and toward different ends. Different settings and prompts simulate language immersion in fun ways, such as a fictional apocalypse that eliminated the English language from all living memory, so students had to communicate in Spanish. With the podcast, Tom knew that the phrase “you’re on the air” would create a real-world reality for students that got language authentically flowing in a different way than it does in a typical classroom setting.
