Remembering Manvel Schauffler

January 13, 2013

One of Hyla’s founders, Manvel Schauffler, (always known as “Schauff”) died in January at the age of 88 in Portland. In Paul Carroll’s words, “Schauff devoted his life to schools, and especially middle schools. He was the head of Catlin Gabel School from 1967 – 1980, and then taught for 10 years at The Bush School in its middle school. He then threw himself into the effort to start Hyla. He was the rock we relied on, the dynamo who lead us forward, and the distinguished expert who gave us credibility. We owe so much to…

Hyla Journal Project – update!

November 30, 2012

I followed the path and then realized, that the prettiest flowers, lay the greater distance from my cobblestones. Hesitantly, I stepped off the path. As my feet touched the spring grass, my heart lept. My soul freer. Dominique,  Wellesley College ~ ’83 Hello?  What’s this?  A complete journal? Mapping the Way to Wisdom: Hyla's Human Relations Program

December 16, 2011

Being an adolescent means expanding on all channels at once. For sixth, seventh and eighth graders, a swirl of chemical changes, skeletal growth spurts and a surge of cognitive brain development create challenging distractions and emotions. Acknowledging this reality and helping students handle it successfully are at the heart of Hyla’s Human Relations curriculum. “Middle school kids are learning so much—intellectually, socially and emotionally—it can be unsettling to have so much going on,” says Kris Van Gieson, Hyla’s human relations teacher. “In that roiling mix, Human Relations gives our students handholds and perspective.” The Human Relations…

A Journey through Art and Geometry

December 15, 2011

Long before Hyla math teacher Chris Johnson knew the exact shape and focus of her sabbatical project, she knew where she’d find her inspiration. “I knew for years my sabbatical project would be in my studio—for me, that’s home,” said Chris. Chris’s studio is a 400 square foot, light-filled room built above her garage on Bainbridge Island.  Rather than scattered with paints and clay, it’s full of fabric, thread and sewing machines. Two large white walls, or “quilt walls,” enable her to hang her creations, step back and evaluate the designs. Since embarking on her sabbatical…
